The 1970s musical Jesus Christ Superstar was Andrew Lloyd Webbers first real stage hit. Though the idea of turning the final days and the death of Jesus into the theme of a Broadway show was initially regarded by many as blasphemy, the work succeeded in capturing the feelings of an entire generation, and quickly set out to conquer the musical world. Songs like Jesus Christ Superstar and I Dont Know How to Love Him have helped make the rock opera an overwhelming success with lasting appeal.
Surprising is the perspective from which the well-known events are portrayed. Judas, a disciple of Jesus since the very beginning, is critical of the Messiahs growing influence and his being celebrated as a superstar. The latter, however, is becoming skeptical of his mission. To give back Jesus the self-assurance hes lost, and to avert an impending insurrection against the Roman authorities, Judas betrays Jesus to the Pharisees, who have him crucified. Filled with despair, Judas commits suicide.

The State Operettas varied programme of operettas, light operas and musicals focuses on classics such as The Beggar Student, The Csrds Princess and The Land of Smiles, but also The Magic Flute, the swing musical Anything Goes and the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.
