The play begins with Cole Porter seated at the piano. Like usual, he is the prototype of ele-gance and sophistication, wearing a tuxedo and drinking Perrier Jouet. He is in his mid-thirties. Linda joins him, also very elegant and in an evening gown. She is the same age as Cole.

They celebrate their anniversary and remember the old times. By and by we learn that its their 45. anniversary. We wonder why they are still so young. But a remark of Linda explains it all: Cole, my dear. You still see the world as you want to see it. Not as it is. Im an old woman. And youre not much younger yourself. Cole answers: For me you will always be so young as in Paris when we met for the first time.

In a flashback we now go to Paris, and the actual play begins. Always commented by Cole and Linda, we now watch Cole Porters life, underscored by the appropriate songs.

At the end of the play we go back to the anniversary. Cole wants to light a cigarette and looks for the cigarette case that Linda gave him for the premiere of his last musical Silk Stock-ings. It was her tradition to give him a cigarette case at every premiere. But she tells him that he didnt get one from her for Silk Stockings. Why not, Linda? - Because Im dead for 10 years. Like I said: You see the world as you want to see it. But that doesnt make me alive again.

Cole tells her that she will never die, because she lives on in his songs. He stands up and dances with her, but suddenly he falls to the floor and cant move anymore. Linda tells him that his leg was amputated some years ago. And today isnt the date of their anniversary. But nevertheless they will be united from now on. And in a last big show number Cole and Linda dance joyously in heaven.
