TJ Johnson is one of the UK s finest jazz and blues singers currently working in the UK. A professional musician since he was 15, he’s also an accomplished pianist and respected bandleader.

A true ambassador of the soul, TJ sings songs of love lost and gained, of life wholesome and corrupt, songs of hope, songs of the night, all delivered with the true passion and boozy swagger of only a man who has been there and knows (Who wrote this? They’re dead right!).

Backed by his band of top, young British musicians TJ’s extraordinary blend of music transcends the boundaries of jazz, blues, soul, country and gospel - he just sings great songs. His influences may include Ray Charles, Dr John, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, BB King, Nina Simone, Alberta Hunter, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Witherspoon and more, but TJ Johnson stamps his hallmark on everything he plays. Dutch virtuoso Tim Kliphuis is recognised as one the world's finest jazz violinists with a spirit and style reminiscent of the late, great swing fiddler, Stéphane Grappelli and a real love for melody. This acclaimed band celebrates Grapppelli’s achievement - and much more - with great warmth. Tim is joined by longstanding accomplices guitarist Nigel Clark, bassist Roy Percy and - this is a special treat - award-winning pianist David Newton to reform the quartet that sold-out at the last Newark Jazz Festival! A world-class performer, Tim’s diverse output and skill as a collaborator with others has surprised and captivated listeners for many years, making him harder to define or pin down. As well as his many works for orchestra and various ensembles, jazz listeners have also been used to him tearing around at Ronnie Scott’s club with Chick Corea and others.

Tim will bring the best out of Derby’s Hot House Band - Jon Eno’s acclaimed youth project and East Midlands Young Jazz Awards winning jazz orchestra - with an exciting collaboration commissioned especially for the Festival. Tim is no stranger to working in churches and cathedrals with his Acoustic Triangles project. Expect to swing in style!

Garland was the 2006 “Musician Of The Year” in the UK’s parliamentary Jazz Society Vote and winner of BBC Jazz award for innovation, for his Lighthouse project and the highly acclaimed CD “If The Sea Replied.”

This exciting young piano trio is led by pianist and composer Tom Cawley (Acoustic Ladyland keyboardist) and features bassist Sam Burgess and drummer Joshua Blackmore. Curios followed their best album nomination for ‘Hidden’ with the richly deserved Best Band title at the last ever BBC Jazz Awards. A brand new album ‘Closer’ is set to cement their reputation.

Drawing on Cawley’s eclectic passions (including iconic pianist Brad Mehldau to whom he pays tribute on ‘Bradford’) Curios’ musical world shifts effortlessly from moments of real beauty to passages of fiery explosiveness. Underpinned by Blackmore’s edgy, dynamic drumming and Burgess’ rhythmic drive the group visits the outer boundaries of the jazz piano trio’s possibilities.

The opening concert of the 2010 Festival features one of Britain’s brightest and most versatile jazz stars. Trumpeter Enrico Tomasso leads a hot sextet formed for Newark Jazz Festival only! His band includes eight times Top UK Jazz Pianist David Newton, Ronnie Scott’s Big Band musical director Pete Long on saxes and clarinet and Guy Barker’s in-demand trombonist Alistair White.

This will be a sell-out - dazzling, high-octane mainstream jazz with a real kick! Book early.

Enrico, son of the fine jazz clarinettist Ernie Tomasso,began playing trumpet aged five, absorbing and meeting many greats such as Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson and the Basie and Ellington bands. But his biggest inspiration was Louis Armstrong who he met and played with when Louis toured England in the sixties and they remained firm friends until his death

A real showman, Enrico played for twelve years with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, enjoys a busy studio career with the likes of Bryan Ferry, Clare Teal, Marc Almond and plays on John Altman's film scores. He performs regularly with Ray Gelato.
