The opera's plot centers on palace intrigue as the evil Queen Gertrud attempts to crush her court opposition while King Endre and his nobles, including the viceroy Bank Ban, are off waging war. Meanwhile, Prince Otto covets Melinda, the faithful wife of Bank Ban. Gertrud then hatches a scheme that leaves Melinda seduced and abandoned, and ultimately driven mad.
