Cosmic Collisions
Narrated by Robert Redford
• Immersed in a dazzling virtual reality simulator, you’ll journey into deep space – well beyond the calm face of the night sky - to explore cosmic collisions, hypersonic impacts that drive the dynamic and continuing formation of the universe in the Hayden Planetarium.
IMAX Film
Dinosaurs Alive!
• Computer-generated images bring to life imposing creatures of the Cretaceous and titans of the Triassic that have captivated and mystified us since their fossils were first unearthed in the 19th century. The film follows AMNH paleontologists past and present, and includes rare 1920s footage of Ray Chapman Andrews, the “real” Indiana Jones.
Special Exhibitions
The Butterfly Conservatory
through May 26, 2008
Mingle with more than 500 live, free-flying tropical butterflies in an enclosed habitat that approximates their natural environment with lush vegetation and live flowering plants. Simulated sunlight and the sound of howler monkeys, parakeets, quetzals, and other species complete the environment.
Water: H2O = Life
through May 25, 2008
This compelling and visually stunning exhibition invites visitors to join in an unprecedented celebration of the beauty and wonder of water—from live fishes and frogs, to roaring waterfalls projected on curtains of fog, to immersive dioramas re-creating a floating Cambodian fishing village and the rock formations of a lake bed in California. This comprehensive exhibition will forever change the way you look at water-not to see it as a resource to be taken for granted, but as a life-sustaining, treasure and one of the most pressing environmental issues of the 21st century.
