Part of the Verona Opera Festival 2008.Aida is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. It was composed between 1870 and 1871 and premiered at the Opera House in Cairo on 24 December 1871.
SYNOPSIS
Verdi's grandest and most classically perfect opera unfolds in the royal palace in ancient Egypt, where the beautiful Ethiopian princess Aida is a captive slave of Egyptian Princess Amneris. When Ethiopian forces attack in an attempt to rescue Aida, Radamès, captain of the Egyptian guard and Aida's sworn beloved, leads a triumphant defence, capturing King Amonasro, Aida's father. As a reward for his victory, the Egyptian king bestows on Radamès the hand of his daughter, Princess Amneris, who is infatuated with the captain and jealous of Aida. Torn between patriotism and passion, a despairing Aida obeys her father's urgings to betray Radamès, but Amneris discovers the plot and vengefully orders Radamès to renounce Aida or be buried alive. Silent and unrepentant, Radamès is led to the dungeon, where he reunites tragically with Aida, who has stolen away to join him in death.

Other Information
One of Verona’s most famous sights is its giant Roman amphitheatre, built in the 1st century AD and the third largest still in existence. It measures 139 metres long and 110 metres wide, and can seat some 25,000 spectators in its 44 tiers of marble seats. In 1913 Verdi’s Aida was the first opera performed in the arena, which has been used at the setting for the summer opera season ever since. Every year up to two thousand performers present grand opera at its best in the unforgettable ambiance of this amazing venue. Performances begin around dusk and spectators on seats on the stone steps of the arena bring small candles (the “mocoleto”) which are lit as darkness falls and the performances begin.
