This story of a refused kiss is somewhat unsophisticated and simple, yet for all that it reflects two worlds of thought which both have their own truth – the world of the widower Lucas, who is finally able to wish a kiss from his beloved Vendulka, and the world of Vendulka, who honours the memory of Lucas’ late wife and refuses to kiss him. Smetana’s music provides an adorable view into the heart of these two young people, into their feelings, experiences and reflections. It lends a gentle philosophical dimension to the simple story and the melodies were quite popular in their day. The new staging of this popular work will be prepared by an experienced production team and will be presented in a co-production with the Smetana’s Litomyšl International Opera Festival.

Other Information
The National Theatre is one of the most important Czech cultural institutions and has a rich artistic tradition, which helped to maintain and develop the Czech language and Czech musical and dramatic arts. The construction of the National Theatre building was financed by contributions from the public and the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone in 1868 became a national event. The theatre's repertoire is based on a rich classical tradition, but also focuses on contemporary domestic authors and draws on modern global trends. The current National Theatre is made up of three artistic companies - opera, drama and ballet.
