One of Verdi's finest operas, Don Carlos was first conceived as a quintessential Grand Opera for the Paris Opéra in 1867. In Verdi's dramatic saga involving three generations of Spanish royalty, the love of a beautiful woman causes the ultimate test of loyalty. As allegiances and friendship are stretched to the limit, Don Carlos rails against his father, Philippe II, struggles with his love for Philippe's wife, and doubts his best friend. Through a series of Verdi's most moving duets, the ideals of freedom and their corruption by absolute power are pitted against declarations of love and friendship.
