Reykjanes Peninsula and a Visit to the Blue Lagoon
Gray Line Iceland
Reykjavik
Iceland
Fri, 22nd August 2008 - Mon, 15th September 2008
Leaving the capital, we head to the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the mid Atlantic ridge rises from the ocean. More than half of the peninsula is covered with lava flows, some of which are only a few hundred years old. You’ll see lava cones and craters of many different shapes and sizes and we’ll visit the bridge between the continents. Next, we’ll head for the lighthouse on the westernmost tip of the peninsula. This is a magnificent area rich in bird life during the summer months.Eldey Island, just off the point at “lands end,” is the home of one of the largest bird breeding colonies of the magnificent Northern Gannet. You can feel the forces of nature and hear the surf crashing at the beautiful basaltic cliffs. It’s simply magical!
From there, we continue through the lava fields to the nearby fishing village of Grindavík. Then we drive to the Blue Lagoon to bathe in the milky blue-green waters (arrival approx. 11:30). There will be a schedule of departures from the lagoon directly to Keflavík International Airport or back to the city.
Children under 12 go free.
