An Ideal Husband
The Abbey Theatre

Thu, 14th August 2008 - Sat, 27th September 2008
ABBEY PREMIERE
Sir Robert Chiltern is a rising young politician, hotly tipped for high office. He has everything a successful public figure could possibly need: an impeccable reputation, a private income, a loyal wife - and a dirty little secret.
Oscar Wilde was a man who knew all about leading a double life. An Ideal Husband is Wilde's painfully personal portrait of a marriage wrecked by double standards. Wielding his infamous wit like a razor, he drew deep on his own experience to create a disconcertingly recognisable picture of a High Society as vicious as it is witty, as moralising as it is vacuous and as overdressed as it is corrupt - a picture as pertinent now as it was when first performed.
An Ideal Husband is directed with hallmark theatricality and brio by Wilde aficionado Neil Bartlett, teaming up with his long-time collaborator, designer Rae Smith, to work with the Abbey for the first time.
