The best way to see the Bay of Islands is from the water, and the nicest way to see it is from on board a Tall Ship.
Day sails on board Northland's iconic tall ship the R.Tucker Thompson allow visitors to step back in time and explore the Bay of Islands as Captain Cook and others did. An interactive experience where you can help sail the ship, by setting the sails and taking the helm, or simply relax and enjoy this beautiful part of New Zealand . Often voted the best day of any holiday, those who step on board are transported back in time to the heroic days of sail. The R.Tucker Thompson is spacious, with plenty of room on board to relax, read a book and soak up the sun (but don't forget your sunblock!). If you fancy something more energetic, then the crew will show you how to set the sails and you help sail the ship. If you really fancy adventure, then ride the bowsprit or climb the rigging, then swing off the rope for a lunch time swim. At lunchtime, we'll find a sheltered cove and you can head ashore, have a swim or stay on board and have a drink. When you get back, we'll serve you a delicious BBQ lunch, tender barbequed chicken on a delicious salad and crusty french bread. We have a licensed bar so you can enjoy a drink with your lunch before setting off for an afternoon sail. If you are musically inclined, feel free to strike a few chords on the ship's guitar.... we've even got a chess board if you fancy a game. Our friendly crew will make you feel at home and share tall tales with you about past voyages. Then kick back, and experience the awesome feeling as the wind fills the sails and we sail home. Tour Info Times: The R.Tucker Thompson leaves Russell wharf at 10am sharp, returning to Russell wharf at 4pm. Daily EXCEPT Christmas Day & 6th February (Waitangi Day) Sailings are daily from October until after Easter, weather permitting. Duration: 6 hours
