The Berlin Philharmonic (in German: Die Berliner Philharmoniker), is an orchestra based in Berlin, Germany. In 2006, a group of ten European media outlets voted the Berlin Philharmonic number three on a list of "top ten European Orchestras", after the Vienna Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Its primary concert venue is the Philharmonie, located in the Kulturforum area of the city. Since 2002, its principal conductor is Sir Simon Rattle. The BPO also supports several chamber music ensembles.

Simon Rattle

Sir Simon Denis Rattle (born 19 January 1955) is an English conductor. He rose to international prominence as conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and since 2002 has been principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic.

He gave his first concert as principal conductor of the BPO on 7 September 2002, leading performances of Thomas Ads' Asyla and Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5, performances which received rave reviews from the press worldwide and were recorded for CD and DVD release by EMI.

    The Berlin Philharmonic Hall, designed by Hans Scharoun, opened on October 15th, 1963 with a concert by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Herbert von Karajan. About 270 concerts take place here each year in the main auditorium which seats 2,440. The Chamber Music Hall plays host to 240 concerts a year which range from small orchestral formations and chamber music groups to recitals. Over the years the world famous names have graced this stage; Wilhelm Furtwangler, Sergio Celibidache and Herbert von Karajan to name but a few.
