Based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier

DramaMusical based on the literary forerunner
Book: Michael Kunze / Music: Sylvester Levay
Directed by: Francesca Zambello
World premiere in autumn 2006

The latest “DramaMusical” by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay is based on the famous novel “Rebecca” by Dame Daphne du Maurier, which was first published in 1938 followed in 1940 by Alfred Hitchcock’s Oscar winning film version starring Sir Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine.
Now for the first time the mystery tale is staged as a musical by the world-renowned director of opera and musical theatre Francesca Zambello.

The novel is set in the early 1930s in a fashionable hotel and in Manderley, an English country manor. The story is told from the point of view of the main character, a naïve young girl who marries the English aristocrat Maxim de Winter on the Côte d’Azur and goes with him to live in his legendary country manor Manderley. Upon her arrival everything is cold and hostile. Everyone keeps talking about Maxim’s first wife, the beautiful and ever-dominant Rebecca. The spirit of Rebecca who drowned while sailing a year earlier is omnipresent, and the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, who was entirely devoted to her, preserves her memory throughout the house.

What is the mystery behind Rebecca’s death?
Rebecca’s boat was found with her dead body in it – and since she had just gone to see her doctor there was even a rumour she was expecting a baby. Now the story has to be investigated again and Maxim, who had identified his own wife as “an unknown woman”, is suspected of having killed Rebecca. The new Mrs. de Winter stands by her husband and takes the initiative: she investigates the motives for Rebecca’s visits to the doctor and finds out that she was terminally ill. It thus seems likely that she herself instigated her own death. After this liberating news, when Maxim can finally remove the picture of Rebecca from Manderley and give his undivided love to his new wife, Manderley is destroyed by fire. Mrs. Danvers perishes in the flames together with the memories of Rebecca.
