Our Uppish and Defiant Fellows

In 1887 the National Theatre's first dramaturge wrote this, the first Czech realist play. To critics of the time it seemed too different, too unusual. They failed to understand it and rejected it. But time has proved its qualities: it has become one of the cornerstones of the golden fund of Czech drama. The author depicts the everyday life of an idyllic-looking village in southern Bohemia. Under the surface of neighbourly camaraderie, dramas are bubbling - there is rivalry for the prestigious designation of 'first farmer', along with discussions of who will be the night-watchman. An unknown man threatens arson. After more than a century this play is more than ever ours - and about us.

The National Theatre is one of the most important Czech cultural institutions and has a rich artistic tradition, which helped to maintain and develop the Czech language and Czech musical and dramatic arts. The construction of the National Theatre building was financed by contributions from the public and the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone in 1868 became a national event. The theatre's repertoire is based on a rich classical tradition, but also focuses on contemporary domestic authors and draws on modern global trends. The current National Theatre is made up of three artistic companies - opera, drama and ballet.
