The National Theatre Opera will dedicate the end of 2008 to the great master of 20th century music Leoš Janáček (1854-1928), who died 80 years ago. Following the premiere of The Makropulos Affair in December 2008, devoted to Leoš Janáček is a song recital of two outstanding Czech artists, the mezzo-soprano Dagmar Pecková and the baritone Ivan Kusnjer. Dagmar Pecková is a singer of world renown who has experienced a host of triumphs on the world’s foremost opera and concert stages. Her current repertoire includes, among other roles, Herodias in Strauss’s Salome, Ortrud in Wagner’s Lohengrin and mezzo-soprano parts in grand vocal-symphonic works by Giuseppe Verdi, Antonín Dvořák and Gustav Mahler. Dagmar Pecková, however, is also a brilliant performer of Mahler, Dvořák and Janáček’s song works. The soloist Ivan Kusnjer, the holder of three prestigious Thalia Awards, is one of the pillars of the current opera ensemble of the National Theatre, where he has worked for 25 years. His repertoire includes more than three dozen operatic roles, some twenty cantatas and oratorios, and fourteen song cycles. His key roles primarily include the great characters in Verdi and Puccini operas and the main baritone roles of the Czech opera repertoire. In 2008 he will appear on the stage of the National Theatre in, among other parts, the title role of Verdi’s Falstaff.

The National Theatre is one of the most important Czech cultural institutions and has a rich artistic tradition, which helped to maintain and develop the Czech language and Czech musical and dramatic arts. The construction of the National Theatre building was financed by contributions from the public and the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone in 1868 became a national event. The theatre's repertoire is based on a rich classical tradition, but also focuses on contemporary domestic authors and draws on modern global trends. The current National Theatre is made up of three artistic companies - opera, drama and ballet.
