The libretto by Adolf Wenig is based on a well-known fairy tale recorded in Bozena Nemcová#s collection. It is a story of a silly devil and a saucy country girl who is eagerly looking to marry. The opera presents three different kinds of environment: the world of the nobility, the natural and joyous world of simple country folks and, of course, hell, depicted with unique humor and quite on the side of the oppressed villagers. Dvorák#s comic opera is charming for the naive view of the world it presents and enchanting with the rich variety of melodies and rhythms. It has been successful with the public from its first performance until today.

The National Theatre is one of the most important Czech cultural institutions and has a rich artistic tradition, which helped to maintain and develop the Czech language and Czech musical and dramatic arts. The construction of the National Theatre building was financed by contributions from the public and the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone in 1868 became a national event. The theatre's repertoire is based on a rich classical tradition, but also focuses on contemporary domestic authors and draws on modern global trends. The current National Theatre is made up of three artistic companies - opera, drama and ballet.
